Did you know…….?
One of Goleta Valley’s most famous settlers, Ellwood Cooper became the largest producer of eucalyptus seedlings at the time. Ellwood Cooper came to Santa Barbara and was interested in the olive grove at the Old Mission. Cooper moved to Goleta in 1870. He then purchased 2,000 acres of the old Dos Pueblos Rancho in Ellwood Canyon for $22/acre. He turned his ranch into a showplace of 7,000 olive trees and 12,500 walnut trees, but he was more widely knows at the man who introduced eucalyptus on a commercial basis to all of California. His old eucalyptus nursery, south of Hollister Avenue was near Ellwood Union School and remnants of his eucalyptus nursery still exist today in Ellwood. Cooper’s ranch was visited by celebrities of the late 1880s including the King of Hawaii. One of our listings has beautiful views of the gorgeous eucalyptus trees!
